The idea behind the newest component of our gamified professional development is a simple one: Everyone loves compliments.
Since getting teachers to observe each other is something I really want to promote, I wanted to make sure teachers could get credit for these observations while not having to complete cumbersome paper-work. To get around this, I created a Google Form with four simple questions you can see above.
Completing an observation is an optional task a teacher can complete for their professional development, but I have included it into our gamified PD. Since it is difficult to get time for teachers to observe each other, I wanted to make sure to create incentives for teachers to complete observations on their own time. Teachers earn points for completing certain tasks for their professional development. Each point gains them an entry to win one of two GoPros I purchased with a grant. When a teacher completes three observations and Observation forms, they earn one point. This means that, if they don't want to continue learning new tech and earning more badges, they can complete multiple observations throughout the year to earn entries into our grand prize drawings.
We have just begun our badge PD this year and I have only had a few observations completed and turned in, so it's too early to tell if these observations will make an impact at our school, but I hope it does.
